Canada Wants Every Citizen to Have High Speed Internet Access

The United States’ neighbors to the north face many of the same problems as the USA when it comes to high speed internet. Urban and most suburban areas are served by high speed internet service providers, but rural areas lack the infrastructure necessary for the fiber optic cables that provide high speed internet, and because there are few potential customers in these areas, providers have no incentive to build the necessary infrastructure. Canada has recognized this problem, and is trying to rectify it with up to $750 million earmarked for wiring up rural areas.

More from The Verge:

As part of declaring broadband a “basic” or essential service, the CRTC has also set new goals for download and upload speeds. For fixed broadband services, all citizens should have the option of unlimited data with speeds of at least 50 megabits per second for downloads and 10 megabits per second for uploads — a tenfold increase of previous targets set in 2011. The goals for mobile coverage are less ambitious, and simply call for “access to the latest mobile wireless technology” in cities and major transport corridors.

The CRTC estimates that some two million Canadian households, or 18 percent of the population, do not currently have access to their desired speeds. The $750 million government fund will help to pay for infrastructure to remedy this. The money will be distributed over five years, with the CRTC expecting 90 percent of Canadians to access the new speeds by 2021.

The new digital plan also touches on accessibility problems, with CRTC mandating that wireless service providers will have to offer platforms that address the needs of people with hearing or speech disabilities within six months. Blais said this timeline was necessary, as the country “can’t depend on market forces to address these issues.”

Alternatives to Cable TV Flourishing

While the sky is not falling quite as predicted a couple of short years ago with regards to cord cutters hurting the cable TV and satellite TV industries, one type of alternative to traditional cable programming is flourishing, with internet-connected TV devices growing in prevalence. NPD Connected Intelligence predicts that there will be 238 million installed internet-connected TV devices by 2019, representing a 59% growth over that time.

More from Multichannel News:

NPD said connected TVs will drive 45% of the growth in the next four years, while less expensive, streaming media players will drive 35% of that growth.

“With an ever-increasing number of connectable devices expected to be connected to the Internet, viewers will have the ability to choose their preferred option instead of using the only device they have attached to their TV,” John Buffone, executive director, industry analyst at NPD Connected Intelligence, said in a statement. “This shift will inevitably result in diminished usage for some devices.”

This year and through 2019, NPD also expects streaming media devices to be found in more homes than any other connected TV devices, pointing to products from companies such as Google, Roku, Amazon and Apple.  Likewise, NPD expects a consolidation and shakeout of operating systems to occur, as more TV makers opt to partner with the likes of Roku and Google and step away from managing their own app ecosystems.

NPD based its forecast and research on a consumer panel of more than 5,000 U.S. consumers, aged 18-plus.

How will this affect the cable and satellite TV business? Likely, it will still result in revenue for cable and satellite companies as these devices are powered by broadband internet that these providers also offer. Stay tuned to find out.

NFL Still Thursday Cable TV Ratings Leader

Despite complaints about the quality of play and talk of viewers abandoning the league, the NFL is still the cable TV ratings leader on Thursday nights, with the Thursday Night Football broadcast between the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland (soon to be Las Vegas?) Raiders last Thursday winning the night, including a 1.4 rating in adults 18-49, the most coveted demographic for advertisers, for the NFL Network.

The NFL Network’s numbers are part of a combined victory for the NFL, with the game also being broadcast on NBC. Here’s more on that from Deadline:

The Kansas City Chiefs 21-13 win over the Oakland Raiders may be the best either team has done ratingswise in primetime this season but with a 11.6/20 in metered market results, it was a hard hit from last week. In fact, last night’s game on NBC and the NFL Network was down 16% from the Dallas Cowboys at the Minnesota Vikings match-up of December 1. On NBC stations alone, the Chiefs vs. Raiders game drew a 9.1 in MM numbers, down 17% from last week with the two big national following teams.

Now NBC will easily win the night with its TNF package, which is down a point from last week with its 3.7/14 rating among adults 18-49 and 12.15 million in unadjusted fast affiliate numbers, but the results once again reflect the soft underbelly the NFL has on TV. In a season that has seen week after week of lows or declines on various networks, the problem of too many big spread wins, too many games or too many match-ups with regional teams still seems to be ignored by the football powers-that-be – AKA, you can’t asks the Cowboys or the Patriots to save your skin every week.

Only 20% of Households Believe Landline Phone is Important

Acccording to a RAND Corporation study, twenty percent of the households in the United States still believe having a landline phone is important. The survey also found that having a cell phone is 3.5 times more important than having a landline.

More from EurekAlert.org:

Study findings suggest about 90 percent of American households have at least one mobile phone, 75 percent have fixed internet service, 58 percent have mobile internet service and 49 percent have fixed telephone service. Mobile telephone service was the most important service for the typical respondent, followed by fixed internet service, mobile internet service and fixed telephone service, although a portion rank fixed telephone first.

Only 2 percent of Americans report purchasing none of these four services, while 93 percent have some form of telephone service and 85 percent have some form of internet service. Of those Americans with telephone service, about 8 percent participate in a reduced-price telephone program, such as the Lifeline program overseen by the Federal Communications Commission.

The study was based on a survey of more than 6,000 adults who participate in the RAND American Life Panel, a nationally representative internet-based survey panel. (Panel participants who do not have internet service are provided access by RAND.) Participants were asked their preferences regarding landline telephones, mobile telephones, mobile wireless internet, and high-speed or fixed internet.

The fact that nearly half of households have a landline shows that the death of the landline is not going as quickly as many in the business have thought, however. It is not clear how many of those landline customers purchased fixed telephone service as part of a bundle with TV, Internet or other services as many providers offer.
